New Facebook Connectivity
20 January 2011
I’m trying out some new ways of integrating this blog into Facebook, and particularly to my Facebook page, to which you’ll also find a link in the sidebar. Once this is working smoothly, it will be a value-added service I can offer my website clients. One kind of integration available is that you can use your Facebook identity to log in here on this site, and you can optionally post your comments both here and on Facebook simultaneously. I’ll describe more details as they become available.
Currently I’m using the Facebook Opengraph plugin from Javier Reyes, which provides several useful widgets plus a Like button for each post. If anyone has suggestions for another easy way to integrate a WordPress blog with a Facebook page, please let me know.

There is a great tool called dlvr.it that I use to integrate my blogs to Facebook pages and Twitter account. It automatically tweets and posts to facebook the title and excerpt of each post directly from the RSS feed!
Thanks for mentioning that. I don’t necessarily like the automatic tweeting and posting feature, but I do like the ability to use one’s Facebook identity when commenting on the site.
The concept will the bottom-line is promote the data concerning an individual’s likes and dislikes, pals as well as tendencies, something that may be invaluable for internet marketers. It will permit internet websites to access this data regardless of whether the person has for no reason frequented it before.
Contributing sites such as ‘Yelp’ enables you to join via your account that can provide them access to just about any data you have made public plus in turn gives you customized facts related to places to eat or even music spots you could possibly get. It’s a thing you could get acquainted for anyone who is a end user of Amazon.com, each time you take a look at the website it’s going to present you with customised suggestions established on the prior buys. This new system lets internet sites to reveal facts together with each other effortlessly. For example, when you connect with a website including Yelp by way of your page on Facebook, Yelp will likely then have access to information you could have made obtainable freely concerning your preferred rings or maybe cooking, and will be capable of have this into thing to consider any time providing you with data related to live show spots or maybe places to eat. This is most likely probably the most questionable aspect on the new adjustments.
I like this page. very interesting to watch.
Fantastic content about Facebook.
Thanks

Creating new ways of integrating a blog is a nice idea but the thing is you’ll never know if it works until you test it. It’s a good connection also between 2 sites, your blog and the facebook, you just have to comment on one site and it can be view in any of the two.
Exactly!
Facebook has become a integral part of everyone’s life. Don’t know why, but it has taken off much better than Friendster.
Linking your blog to Facebook is a good idea to “centralise” all your postings and efforts with one click!

This whole integrating into Face Book thing seems interesting.I haven’t tried anything that “cutting edge” but hey, maybe. Anyways I book marked this site for further review. thanks for the info. Great Post.
I think using facebook to market your site is a good idea. It is important to take advantage of all the traffic and visitors from facebook.
I agree, integrating with Facebook is one of the biggest necessities for today’s business. I have been using dlvr.it, it automatically updates the FB & Twitter, but i sincerely thought that auto update is the only thing possible. Steve, this Facebook Opengraph plugin looks interesting to me. I would like to use it for my pages to me..

I really like the idea of having all your ducks in a row. Being able to get your posts out to the maximum amount of people really has to help your exposure, and ‘liking’ stuff is a lot of fun and it can be really addictive so it makes a great addition.

Neat! I notice a Facebook login window there on the left-hand side. I’ve been seeing this around on more and more blogs and now I’m considering adding this to my blogs as well. Facebook is maintaining its social media dominance!

Speaking about social intergration… Why don’t you have +1 button that has been recently introduced by Google?
Why don’t you try using RSS Graffiti, i have used it for my blog and its quite handy, as soon as i update the blog, it automatically gets posted to the wall of my FB page

Hi – I was looking to get something like this setup on my blog too, I like the concept but when I just logged in with facebook your commentluv feed and feature went away and it made me think I would not get the commentluv link if I posted using Facebook.
As so many people like commentluv and its a way of increasing a blogs reader base, I wondered if you were able to somehow combine the 2 so that they worked well together?

Have you tried the same process with Google+? All the best!
I haven’t yet. I’ll have to look into the possibilities. Do you know of any good tools for doing that in WordPress?
You could use iframe in order to have a tab on Facebook which shows each new post.
Thank you for mentioning the dlvr.it extension, Maryland WD. I have been looking for exactly that and found it on Google. I use both facebook and twitter to reach out to the social network community, but I think social media is more of a help for computer users (those with no technical skills) and it actually slows down us developers because it requires us to have to update more outlets. This extension is excellent for automating our content distribution so we can keep our focus all of our time on developing better custom web interfaces.
It sounds like you have a great idea here and I am anxious to see it up and running. Make sure to keep us updated with new posts so we can make sure to check it out.
I would think that the one plug in which is serving the dual purpose of an auto log in for comments is the most functional way of using face book with Word Press, unless you start creating voting polls either from the face book side or the word press end and you somehow mesh the two so that whichever platform provides the best way to create the poll can then post the results on both platforms. You can also enhance your blog if you post video clips on facebook and use the word press widget for the right side, for instance, and when you post your video clips on facebook, the right side of your WP blog will display the update with a thumbnail and the headline of the post. What’s nifty about the facebook widget is you can click the thumbnail and the video will play in its thumbnail size without taking you to another page or popping up a window.
Steve, this sounds like a great idea. Integrating your blog into your facebook page will get the web marketing you want and it will get you some valuable feedback from readers on your product. Please let us know when you have it up and running so we can check it out.
It’s like hitting two birds with one stone, and sure it is a good idea for a marketing strategy. You get to double you exposure in just a single action and cater two different markets at the same time. And literally every web page has a widget so it would be a total waste if this opportunity will be ignored. It would be really neat if Facebook would put an emphasis on the blog too to complete the pack.

Facebook is absolutely huge in the amount of people that are on it at any given time. We use Facebook for so many different things it is ridiculous but I think using it for marketing, research, or consulting would be an excellent idea because there are so many people on it all the time. Just last night I was on there and an ad for the Indianapolis Colts came up and said if you “liked them on this site you could win a free jersy, well that got me to thinking how well would advertising something for your company like this work? I am going to do like you are doing and try implementing something like this. I look forward to your future posts about your success. Thanks for sharing.
This is great news! I do stay a lot on facebook and this is really one great way to make further use of my time on it. Thank You very much for sharing this, I am really grateful for this.
I think you have a great idea here and I would like to use it myself if you don’t mind. Facebook and Twitter both would be great test subjects to do this with because they are so popular. Isn’t there something like 750,000,000 active users on Facebook currently? Where else could you get that kind of exposure? Awesome Idea man!
I think having the two linked together is a great idea, as you stated whenever you make an update to your web page, which to get the best ranking should be every three days, it will automatically post on Facebook so everybody out there is aware and can then traffic your web page to even increase your ranking even more. Great idea, please post the out come as soon as you try it and get any kind of results.
I think this is a great idea. Have you done it yet, I would be really interested to see how it turns out. I hope that you will post your finding of success in a later post. That I can think of I haven’t seen this done before and before I try it I would like some reassurance that it will work. Thanks for sharing your idea and I truly hope it works.
I agree with Gregory regarding Facebook widgets and playing the videos posted in thumbnail size, sometimes videos can really slow down a computer and when they don’t have to be resized or configured differently they tend to play faster with out slowing the computer down as well. The integration process is a great idea, if it works with Facebook and your web site would it work with a program called “The City? What it is, is just another social network that is primarily in a certain group of people like a Church congregation. If you have any information about this please let me know in your next post.
Steve, your Idea is great. Facebook Connect will be a big boast to your site since skipping registration is something any mainstream web user can appreciate.
Steve, you might also want to look into a certain extension for face book fan pages which lets you turn your front / home facebook page into a promotional page which prompts the new visitors to press the LIKE button in order to receive a discount or whatever sort of offer or bonus throw in you would like to offer. More companies are using this sort of Facebook promotion and you probably heard about it already or have visited another face book page that uses this. You may as well try it if you feel you have something to give away. It will only increase your ranking on the facebook social network and the search engines.
I think this dialogue about Facebook widgets and extensions can go on and on because of the open platform that Facebook has provided for developers to make their own extensions. The concept of open source is good it inspires innovation and that can lead to real progress both on the social network and other compatible platforms. It is good to stay keen on the latest extensions for Facebook, but this blog can also serve to be a resource for the latest, coolest extension, so long as those who discover any extensions also provide a link to it or accurate information so the rest of us can easily find it on the search engines.
I hope you get this going soon so we can see how it works, I would like to try something like this with mine but I also wanted auto reply built in. Is this something that your integration will have in it? Does your blog page have to be set up using WordPress in order to do this? You have a great idea here and if you can get it to work I have a feeling it will be very popular very soon.
Hey,
Its undoubtedly a great idea. Personally on facebook all the time. Thanks for sharing it.
Cheers.
I think facebook connectivity is really cool. It can really help cut down on the amount of passwords people will have to worry about.
Well, yesterday was officially “national un friend day. It is a day which is a call to action for all Facebook profile owners to clean out their friends list from extraneous people on their network. I know most Facebook profile owners are straight hoarders when it comes to friends. This tendency stems from the days when facebook owned the majority of the market share and the thinking was like a popularity contest to have the most friends. That mentality still exists today, thus, the invention of national un friend day. For businesses, it is a call to action to purge your friends network by eliminating spammers who infiltrate only to steal your readers so they can send them relentless solicitations. Since you seem to be using Facebook widgets and are looking to expand upon that, take a few minutes each week to delete any spammers so we can collectively shun them and hopefully limit their efforts.
Finally they have this plug-in. This is so much easier and way better to automatically share your contents online….
I have try it. it is good for google in index our site or pages.
You may want to know that Facebook recently released its updated Comments plugin, which includes a robust set of new features. They also announced a set of publisher partners that will now integrate the plugin as their commenting platform of choice. Personally, I hope Joomla is among them (haven’t read it yet). The features, which include threaded comments, moderation controls and the ability to sync the comments to a Facebook Page, signal another step toward Facebook’s proliferation across the web with its social plugins. I think the most notable feature is the ability to sync comments across a site and a publisher’s Facebook Page. This has the potential to increase the discussion and commentary on websites that see a bulk of the discussion take place on its Facebook Page.
Now that Facebook is fully supporting custom iFrame tabs and phasing out FBML and the Static FBML support, many page admins are wondering how best to add functionality to their iFrame tabs. And since Mr. Diamond is open to suggestions for fully utilizing Facebook connectivity, he can look to new plugins which do the same thing to add popular FBML tags that facilitated interaction on Facebook, such as Reveal/Fan-Gating, Multi-Friend Invite, Share button, Like button and Comments. Fortunately, a subset of the XFBML tags (a.k.a. Social Plugins) intended for use on websites to integrate them into Facebook’s “social graph also work great on iFrame tabs. Now page admins can simply add a free iFrame tab application to their page, which makes adding a fan-gating feature very easy, and they can add Like buttons, Send buttons and/or Comments boxes to their tabs. There are tutorials available on the net for how to integrate these features.
Yes I think Facebook is a wonderful social media to promote your business and to market your brand. It would be great to connect your blog to Facebook.
For all the cool connectivity that Face Book provides for blogs, it has its vulnerabilities. So you always have to ask yourself about what sort of code you may be using to open a doorway into your site. Case and point: Earlier Tuesday, Graham Cluley, a consultant with Web security firm Sophos, said that “explicit and violent” images had been flooding the News Feeds of Facebook users for the past 24 hours or so. Facebook says a hack that exploited some Web browsers was responsible for a flood of porn, violent images and other graphic content that spread across the site over the past couple of days. Spokesman Frederic Wolens said Facebook’s security team had been working to identify the cause of the spam and that, by Tuesday afternoon, “we have eliminated most of the spam caused by this attack.” “We are now working to improve our systems to better defend against similar attacks in the future,” Wolens said in an e-mail.
Very good point. Thanks for posting.
Once you figure out how to get integrated into Facebook please make a post about your success and how you did it so that I can give it a try with my site. Do you think the same thing would be available for Twitter or Linkedin? I like the idea that people can make comments etc. on my page so that I can use it kind of like a consulting page with advice. Not to mention Facebook and Twitter are global so they can contact me at anytime of the day or night, that would be great so I wouldn’t miss anybodies comments due to time constraints. Amazing blog you have great ideas I hope you keep posting more as you think of them.
Maybe you should consider the Facebook Comments Box Social Plugin which now includes great game-changing features. E.g. when you add this plugin to your blog/website, visitors can leave a comment as their Facebook profile or any Page they administer. They can choose to have their comment posted to their Facebook wall (Profile or Page, depending upon how they made the comment). The comment also publishes to the News Feed of their friends/fans. The comments are easily shared with friends or with people who like your Page on Facebook. If a user leaves the “Post to Facebook box checked when she posts a comment, a story appears on her friends’ News Feed indicating that a comment was made on your website, which will also link back to your site. The best part I like is that threads stay synced across Facebook and on the Comments Box on your site regardless of where the comment was made.
How does Facebook Opengraph plugin work exactly I have never heard of it. I have researched WordPress as well because I was unfamiliar with it and it sounds like it would be easier to use when it comes to integrating our blog with the social network of our preference, I understand that you were using Facebook but that isn’t the only social media that you can integrate with is it because I was looking for one that I can integrate with Twitter or Linkedin as well. Have you ever heard of or researched a Social Media Science network called SYNND, where they put together whole campaigns for your company and they have professional blog commenter’s that attract attention to your blog? I have seen on several blogs here lately that they are the preferred Social network so I am going to have to check them out as well. Thanks for the information on the Opengraph plugin I hope you can post just a little bit more on how it works.
Most extensions for Facebook seem to be compatible only to the more popular web browsers like internet explorer or fire fox or safari. But this extension I came across provides functionality for Google Chrome browser, which is fast becoming more popular, especially because Google is now running TV ad spots for Google Chrome. This extension is called Alwittizer Facebook Enhancer which makes some practical adjustments to the website’s interface. One of these tweaks involves the top menu bar as well as the menu located in the left pane, both of which remain in a fixed location as you scroll up and down the page. Also, a level of transparency (10% to be exact) is applied to the bottom menu bar. This extension also magnifies, via a pop-up window, both photos and profile pictures whenever you hover over them. Finally, the current day’s birthdays are highlighted with a distinct yellow background. I think that’s pretty cool.
You have effectively created a huge channel between you and your future readers. Now that you have this option of logging into Facebook to leave a reply, you’re giving people more options on how they can express themselves here.
The company unsubscribe.com launched the web-browser extension Social Monitor yesterday; it examines applications that are connected to users’ accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and displays information on their threat levels and reputations. When it comes to protecting data privacy. Anyone using Facebook who is concerned about privacy and third-parties accessing their personal information might want to consider using Social Monitor or Disconnect. There is quite a bit of information that gets shared behind-the-scenes when Facebook users install apps, like company pages, or use their Facebook logins or Facebook Connect to access third-party pages. Offerings including Social Monitor and Disconnect can simplify the process of protecting user data, eliminating the need for users to dig through Facebook privacy settings. So I think it would be a idea to at least look into these. What I don’t know is if any of these somehow integrates with a Word Press blog.
I think It makes sense to use a relatively new Facebook blog plugin. This one is good when you want the comments your visitors add to Facebook to become part of your website, not only visually, but as a part of the WordPress database. In April 2011, Facebook released an extension to their protocol (the so called graph api) that makes it possible. This plugin uses the extended Facebook protocol to import comments from Facebook to WordPress database. Some visitors prefer to post comments to Facebook Social Plugin as these comments are becoming part of their social activity and are displayed on their wall. Other visitors prefer not to use Facebook comments. They would like to post their comments to your WordPress blog. The Facebook Import Comments combines both type of plugins and makes them part of your WordPress blog. From an SEO standpoint, your blog will be more dynamic and more attractive for spiders.
I’m developing a new blog and one of the most important features I want to implement is a convenient and efficient and semi-automated comments module. What I mean by semi-automated is using a plugin that posts the comments from my Facebook fan page onto a designated page on my blog. This is important from an SEO and ranking standpoint because Google bots are programmed to give higher rankings to sites which demonstrate more human activity. The amount of relevant comments will help in this regard which is why it is an important feature that any blog developer should seriously consider and make sure it works properly by continually testing and monitoring the comments that are submitted.
Facebook is certainly a wonderful social media to promote your business and for marketing your brand. I think it is a great idea to linkyour blog to Facebook.
I wonder how the Facebook public stock offering will affect the way Facebook develops or accepts third party development of extensions for Facebook users. Even though that social network is already well funded, sometimes the direction, philosophy or culture can change when a company goes public, unless of course, CEO Zuckerberg maintains a majority holding, which is what we would fully expect him to do. Like Steve Diamond, I prefer to drive traffic to my blog rather than a Facebook fan page. I still use Facebook as a tool to drive traffic to a blog or as just another options for readers to use when submitting comments.
Katherine had some very good points about information leaking out behind the scenes, you can’t be to careful now days on the internet with identity theft and what not. This sounds like another reason to use a social media company like SYNND to run a campaign for you so that you don’t have to be on Facebook or Twitter where there is a chance of information leaking. I’m positive that they know what they are doing, so they can keep this from happening.
I looked at all the links and widgets on this web site, but you seem to have all the connectivity and social media essentials like the Linked In button to automatically add users from various email and social media accounts. You also have the Facebook widget.. The only thing I didn’t notice was a Twitter widget that shows your latest status updates (or Tweets). This is an area you may want to consider to keep your site updates constant. Even if you don’t feel you have enough to say in order to update your Twitter often enough to make it worthwhile, you might want to reconsider that and realize that even logging onto Twitter once a week just to chat can be of benefit. Besides, you can always configure your Twitter account with Twitterfeed.com and Google Alerts to make transform your Twitter account into a news feed about your chosen topic. This ensure your Twitter account will Tweet related threads and links many times per day. It will also gain you followers.
I think this is a good idea but may I ask what you are trying to accomplish by doing this? I have heard that people are doing this for marketing purposes, is that the case with you? If it is have you tried Twitter as well, from what I understand using press releases on Twitter is easier than Facebook? I hope that this bit of information will be helpful if this is what you are trying to do.
One of your readers, Katherine I think it was, made a very good point about protecting your data privacy by using Social monitor or Disconnect. Although I have never heard of Social Monitor before today so I am going to have to do some research to compare it to Disconnect, which I have used for years with no complaints. Thank you Katherine for bringing this new information to light.
This is very interesting I like the idea of the comments from your comment section being put on your Facebook page simultaneously. Can you link other things together like that? I mean obviously you are doing it with your blog but can you do that if you have a full fledged web site or would it interfere with the links and back links that you have set up?
I read that Facebook recently released the “Fan Box Widget to Turn Website Visitors into Facebook Fans. This was a move to increase the power of Facebook Pages by allowing brands and businesses to share status updates from their Facebook Page and get new Facebook fans on any website. This Fan Box widget was built on Facebook Connect and enables page owners to put a piece of their Facebook Page anywhere on the web. This widget is designed to help convert website visitors into Facebook fans. It’s a smart move by Facebook to make it easier for brands and businesses to encourage more of their customers to become fans of their Facebook Pages. Users can view the most recent posts from the Page, see a list of other fans (including their friends), and, most importantly, become a fan without leaving the site. I’m not sure if Steve’s widget on the right is the same, but if it’s not, maybe you’ll want to update it.
It is an excellent idea to protect your data privacy by using Social monitor or Disconnect. Thank you Katherine for bringing that up, is this a program that you can use all the time to protect your identity no matter where you are on the internet? I haven’t seen any new information on how this worked out for you, do you have any updates to date?
If you have had problems with installing other plugins that automatically update your blog, thry the Facebook Walleria. It’s a WordPress Plugin that embeds a number of Facebook Objects into your website. It uses the Facebook Graph to pull information about Albums, Photos, Feed, Comments, Events and presents the information on your website in a sleek style. Instead of doing a double job of updating your site and Facebook profile, Facebook Walleria enables you to update your albums, events and feed on Facebook with the changes appearing in real-time on your website.
This was a great idea when you first had it. How has It worked for you? I thought you were launching this about a month back did it ever happen? I want to do something like this with my blog so I would really like to know how it went with you. Can you please post what happened?
I sure wish I could find a module / plug in that could integrate everything together. By everything, I mean every time you write an article, you could have check box options to send a teaser with a link to the article page on your web site and you could then choose to send an email to your newsletter subscribers as well as to various social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Is that too much to ask? Does anyone know of a plug in that can do all of this?
I have been looking for plugins for my own web site that will help me automate many time consuming tasks. The problem for me is that I have seen way more widgets made for Word Press blogs and not very many of the types of modules or plug ins for Joomla content management web sites. That is the CMS I am using, and while there are many plug ins available, none integrate comments with Facebook.
Since you are using Word Press for Your blog, I will give you a recommendation that was given to me by a developer. He said I should try using the WPFacePages’ plugin. With it you can do everything associated with a blog, plus you can do anything in Facebook that you can do in WordPress. It also has Twitter Integration and Google +1 Integrations, Google Maps, a Facebook Slider (for showing slides of pictures, videos, content) in Facebook, and more.
I got a chance to look into the WPFacePages plug in and it looks like a fantastic plug in to implement into a Word Press blog. It does so many of the monotonous tasks that need to be done when you update your blog. Instead of having to also manually update your Facebook page and your Twitter status message, this plug in does it for you. What a huge time saver. This is a game changer.
I think facebook plug in is very useful for SEO point of view.Facebook is best social network for online marketing.
Facebook has fan pages and group pages now. Fan pages is a more recent development. You might want to try creating a fan page or a group page for yourself. I think that people are more likely to become a fan of someone or something or join a group than accept a friend request.

The fact that you are focusing on Facebook promotions tells me that I am on the right track with what I was thinking. I have seen some killer customizable facebook code. It is a very customizable interface. I have seen some pages that look like a custom website. I imagine it’s a good way to pick up traffic for your site, no?
I have thought this was a good idea from the beginning, there have been a lot of people that were trying to tell me that the best thing to do is get a twitter account but I have felt that not many people really use twitter for a long time and decided that the best way to go social media wise was Facebook because it is still growing everyday.
Even though I have heard prognostications that Facebook will become less relevant in the future, that could just be one of those predictions that are declared just to garner attention for the analyst. For now, I think it’s a good idea to develop more connectivity between your website and your Facebook page. It can only help to integrate the two sites to become more relevant and generate more unique visitors to both sites.
I know that Facebook is considered one of the top social media blogs, and I can’t tell you how many websites have a module so you can sign in with your Facebook account. So it is definitely a popular form of connectivity. I think it is safe to say that anyone who is on social media has a FB page so this move makes a lot of sense.
This is a great idea for anyone, if you can put your business out on the social media of all time then you are going to see more and more traffic leading to more and more sales and profits. This was a great article done by a great mind because so many others haven’t thought of this yet. Keep up the good work I really enjoyed the read.
I would say that it is a sound strategy to use the Facebook login connectivity on your website. It is no doubt popular and becoming even more popular. That is because Facebook Home may well be a hit. The reception for this Android software has been decidedly mixed, but there is at least one statistic the social network can tout: As of this weekend, Home has been downloaded more than 500,000 times.
Over the past few months I have been tracking the progression of Facebook Connect sites including what sites are implementing them as well as what creative widgets are being developed. Occasionally I even speak about the business proposition presented by Facebook Connect and how it compares to services such as Twitter. While it’s frequently easy to come up with a better way to implement Facebook Connect, using existing systems can reduce the headache and time to launch for any Facebook Connect implementation.
I think this is a great idea and I hope that people will take it to heart. The more we can do like this the better off things will run. Doing advertising and marketing through social media is a good thing these days and you really need to have a mobile app as well. The more mobile you can get the better off your business will be.
