Website Design

Website Design Philosophy

I take a holistic approach to website design. I believe that each aspect of a site contributes to its overall impression, impact, cohesiveness, and effectiveness. The aspects, which must harmonize with each other for maximum effect, include:

  • Page layout
  • Graphics
  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Architecture
  • Navigation
  • Content

All these should be enlisted in service of a website’s overall message and purpose. Please see my website portfolio for selected examples of my site designs.

Website Design Process

or What To Expect When Working With Me

Here are the steps to expect when I collaborate with you to create your website.

  1. Initial consultation. We’ll meet on the phone or in person. We’ll discuss your site’s message and purpose. We’ll discuss your preferences in look and feel. See below (scroll down) for some questions to consider before our consultation.
  2. I’ll prepare a list of follow-up questions for you to answer that go into more detail about what we’ve discussed.
  3. I’ll prepare two proposals for your consideration: Gold Website Design Service and Platinum Website Design Service. With the Gold Service, I take what you’ve told me and I build your site based on my best judgment about how to fulfill your wishes. There’s a minimum of iterative collaboration between us. There is some consultation and feedback, of course, but no major changes in direction during the process.

With the Platinum Service, we collaborate on each aspect of the site design. I present mock-ups of my ideas, and we iteratively build out the site based on feedback and suggestions from you at each stage.

The Gold Service is less expensive, typically between $3,500 and $6,000 dollars depending on complexity. The Platinum Service is more expensive because it takes more time, typically between $5,000 and $9,000. Either way you get the benefit of my extensive experience.

  4. You accept one proposal and pay the first half of the fee.
  5. I begin work on the website.
  6. I complete the website, usually within four weeks for Gold Service and eight weeks for Platinum Service.
  7. You pay the second half of the fee.

Pre-Consultation Questions to Consider

  1. What is the main message of your website? What do you want it to say about you and your business?
  2. What’s the overall tone of the message? Edgy, playful, serious, professional, mystical, down-to-earth….
  3. What is the primary goal and purpose of the website? In other words, what do you wish a typical visitor to do when they engage with the site?
  4. Do you feel the current site (if you have one) accomplishes that goal? If so, why? If not, why not?
  5. What is the second most important purpose of the site?
  6. Do you plan to include a blog?
  7. If so, how frequently do you plan to post in your blog? Will you allow users to post comments?
